Chinese Grammar: Comparing 反而 and 相反 to say "on the contrary"

Basic structure rules of 反而 & 相反
反而 & 相反 can both express the contrary of something, but they are used differently.
First, from a grammatical point of view, these two words have a different word type.
反而 is an adverb, and it is embedded as a part of a whole phrase.
相反 is an adjective and it can be placed in the middle of a sentence with punctuation to split up the context and the turning result.
Examples with 反而
雨 没有 停 ， 反而 更 大 了。
Rather than stopping, it rained even harder.
他 没有 放弃 学习 汉语 ， 反而 坚持下去 了 。
He doesn’t give up on learning Chinese, on the contrary, he's carrying on.
Examples with 相反
他 没有 得 第一 名 ， 相反 ， 我 的 了 第一 名。
He didn’t get the first prize, on the contrary, I got it.
我 以为 他 要 回家 ， 相反 ， 他 留下 来 了。
I thought he was going home, however, he is staying.
Different context to use 反而 & 相反
反而 indicate a turning point of one thing. Usually what the speaker talked about did not get the result he was expecting. The outcome is really different than the previous situation and can be the complete opposite.
On the other hand, use 相反 to describe a different aspect of one similar thing, the difference degree is not as strong as 反而.

她 不但 没 变 老 ， 反而 更 年轻 了。
She hasn't aged, instead, she looks even younger.
妈妈 没 批评 我 ， 反而 表扬 了 我。
Mom didn’t criticize me, on the contrary, she praised me.

I think that the whole people like to eat an apple, however, all the people hate it.

Other uses of 相反
Do you remember 相反 is an adjective? Right. Then, it can be used both as an attribute and a predicate.
When 相反 is used as an attribute, use it with a noun, and make sure to add a 的 just after.
When 相反 is used as a predicate, then put it after the subject.
